Byatt from The Guardian noted it may refer to “an old-fashioned stimulant to be kept in elegant boxes and snorted gracefully in society” and “arbitrary and unpleasant deaths.”

There are still many intriguing references made by Pratchett in this book, including to various big wars such as Napoleonic Wars and World War I and to the subject of feminism and Joan of Arc. To make the story even more exciting, he also brings out interesting characters: a vampire, a troll, a werewolf, a band of misfits, and a young gal who crossdresses to join the army—something that actually happened in the past when army and wars are “men only”.
