In 1978, The World According to Garp is published as the fourth novel of John Irving. This work of Irving established him as one of the most imaginative authors of his era. Couple of years following its release, the book became a bestseller. In 1980 it won the National Book Award for Fiction. In 1982, a movie adaptation based on the novel was released, starring Robin Williams.
