Brothers Grimm Fairy Stories.pdf (eBook)

Posted on 2:22 AM by Unknown
PDF Pages: 223 | File Size: 2.5MB |

The Brothers Grimm were Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm, who both were German academics, linguists and cultural researchers. They collected old folk tales and published them under the tittle Grimm's Fairy Tales. More or less like H.C. Andersen's, their works became very popular before the modern fantasy and fairy tales emerged. Probably, the Grimms differed from Andersen in the sense on the darkness of their tales. In the original version, the brothers' stories were a lot gloomier than the Disney version. Some of the most notable among those tales are Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty, and Snow White.

H.C. Andersen - Short Stories.pdf (eBook)

Posted on 2:18 AM by Unknown
PDF Pages: 93 | File Size: 1 MB |

Hans Christian Andersen was probably the biggest Danish, or even world, author on fairy tales, poets, and short stories for children. Before modern literature invented its own fairy tales and children stories, Andersen's (and also the Grimms') works were probably the only kid fantasies that went universal. Translated and adapted into many countries in more than a hundred languages. The stories reached their audience not only through printed books, since they also influenced plays, ballets, and motion pictures.

Lewis Caroll - Alice In Wonderland.pdf (eBook)

Posted on 12:40 AM by Unknown
"Alice in Wonderland" by Lewis Caroll | PDF Pages: 51 | File Size: 1MB |

Another work that actually doesn't require any further introduction. Especially after "Alice In Wonderland" brought to the big screen beautifully by Tim Burton. However, just in case any of you is not familiar yet with this particular Lewis Caroll's everlasting children fantasy masterpiece, then here's a little bit for you.

Alice is very bored on the river bank, and ot of the blue she sees a White Rabbit walking, mumbling, and looking at his watch. Alice follows the Rabbit down a rabbit hole and she lands in a hall with a tiny locked door that to a beautiful garden. She meets many creatures (the Rabbit, a Mouse, a Cartepilar) and eats many things that turns her body into gigantic or tiny size. However it takes her a long time and journey to get the right size for her to get into the garden.

She then meets a Duchess, her ugly baby, her hostile Cook, and her Cheshire Cat in the woods. Alice tries to save the baby, but the baby turns into a pig. The Cheshire Cat appears and tells her to visit the Mad Hatter or the March Hare. Then Alice arrives at the table with the Hare, the Hatter, and the Dormouse in a tea party. They are rude so Alice leaves. She goes through a door in a tree and gets into the room with the tiny door leading to the garden. This time she manages to get into the garden.

She meets three gardeners painting white roses red. They are afraid of being executed by the Queen of Hearts. Suddenly the Queen appear and invites Alice to play croquet, and Alice joins a very strange game. She then learns that the Duchess is to be executed. The Duchess is brought from prison and begins talking with Alice about the moral of everything. The Queen asks Alice to meet the Mock Turtle, escorted by the Gryphon. Alice learns the Mock Turtle's history and sees a dance called the Lobster Quadrille. Alice again tries to recite poetry with little success.

The Gryphon takes Alice back to court. The Knave of Hearts is on trial for stealing the Queen's tarts. Alice is called to testify after she grows larger again. The King orders her to leave the court, but she refuses. She is outraged by the unfairness of the court's proceedings and provokes the Queen to order her execution. The cards rise up and attack Alice. At this point, Alice realizes that she has been asleep for a long time in her sister's lap. She tells her sister about the events of her marvelous dream and then goes in to tea. Her sister is captivated by the dream and imagines Alice as a grown woman who will still have a child-like sense of wonder.

Fyodor Dostoyevsky - Notes From Underground.pdf (eBook)

Posted on 7:24 AM by Unknown
PDF Pages: 85 | File Size: 1 MB |

A Customer Review at Amazon.com (82 of 93 people found the following review helpful; 5 out of 5 stars):
Dostoevsky has written an amazing portrait of a loner, whose introverted, sick thoughts spill out on the pages in demented brilliance. The novel is a product of European cynicism, nihilism, and inertia, all of which reached a certain height in the paralyzed upper circles of 19th century Russia...The main character, who does nothing except hide from the world, is a total misfit, a loser in life at home, at work, and in love--a jerk, a dweeb, a dork, a geek in modern American parlance--yet through Dostoyevsky's clear prose, we see into his wounded soul...He is apart from society, recognizes no social obligation. He argues that suffering is still better than mere consciousness, because it sharpens the awareness of your being, therefore suffering is in man's interest...This is in fact not an average novel at all, but a book concerned with the play of ideas, ideas that flash around like comets and meteorites inside Dostoevsky's head.

The plot line...concerns an underground man, a man like a rat or a bug, who lives outside, or more likely, underneath the world's gaze. It is a lonely, tortured life lived inside a single skull with almost no contacts with the rest of the world except for a vicious servant. The "action" of the book comes only when the protagonist worms his way into a dinner with former schoolmates. They don't want him, he despises all of them. So, as you can imagine, a good time is had by all. The underground man winds up in a brothel with an innocent, hapless prostitute named Liza. He wishes for some relationship, he immediately abhors the very thought of contact with another person. The result is worse than you can predict, though I will say that it involves "the beneficial nature of insults and hatred".

In the tradition of novels of introspective self-hatred, Dostoevsky's has to be one of the first...I realized how much Dostoevsky had influenced the Japanese writers of the 20th century...some of these characteristics are found in almost everyone at some point in their life, unpleasant as that realization may be. I have to give NOTES FROM UNDERGROUND five stars, though I can't say I enjoyed it. It is simply one of the most impressive novels ever written.

Aldous Huxley - Brave New World.pdf (eBook)

Posted on 2:55 AM by Unknown
PDF Pages: 112 | File Size: 1MB |

A Customer Review at Amazon.com (429 of 487 people found the following review helpful. 5 out of 5 stars):

As critic and best-selling author Neil Postman points out so well in the introduction to his book "Amusing Ourselves To Death", we have congratulated ourselves prematurely by figuring we made it past the totalitarian nightmare state depicted in George Orwell's gripping cautionary tale "1984". Perhaps, Postman suggest, we should remember another visionary totalitarian nightmare scenario and use it to critically examine the contemporary state of social and psychological well-being. Of course he was referring to Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World, written before Orwell's by 15 or so years, and even more frightening in its own way in the world it describes. More and more, that frightening vision looks like our contemporary world.

Picture his ironic portrait of a populace doped into Nirvana on "soma" (read Prozac and Zoloft), isolated and diverted by petty preoccupations in mindless trivial pursuits (read video games and internet surfing to all the porno sites), oblivious to anything not directly pertaining to themselves and totally unaware of the degree to which they are being socially, economically, and politically co-opted. Beginning to sound more familiar? Remember, says Huxley, brute force is not the only method an oligarchy can use to influence, manage, and finally control our hard-won freedoms and liberties; it can be done with over-indulgence and the deliberate fertilization and promulgation of apathy through self-absorption, as well.

Even Huxley says (circa 1960, almost 30 years after the original publication) in the preface of the revised version of the book that he is alarmed as to how quickly the sort of events he figured might take a hundred years such as the appearance of political internationalism and transnational corporate entities are already arising and beginning to control more and more of the substance of our social, economic, and political lives. . .

Want to find out more? Read this book, but do so slowly, taking notes, recognizing how many contemporary parallels there are to each of the "whimsical details" he conjures up, and then figure out in your own mind how very close he was to prognosticating just how far we have come toward the "Brave New World" in which everyone's soul and awareness is for sale . . .

Helen Fielding - Bridget Jones Diary.pdf (eBook)

"Bridget Jones Diary" by Helen Fielding | PDF Pages: 82 | File Size: 1 MB |

This is the diary of Bridget Jones, a character created by Helen Fielding. And in her diary, she tells readers about her daily personal life as a single thirty-something woman and how she deals with the daily activities as a working woman in London. The way Helen Fielding, as Bridget Jones off course, captures the day-in-day-out events is often often humorous, if not silly. She presents everything a career single woman cares about in the ramblings: career, self-image, vices, family, friends, and, last but not least romantic relationships.

Robert Tressell - The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists.pdf (eBook)

Posted on 9:44 PM by Unknown
PDF Pages: 823 | File Size: 3 MB |

Editorial Review at Amazon.com:
'The first great English novel about the class war, The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists is spiked, witty, humorous, instructive and full of excitement, harmony and pathos.' Alan Sillitoe 'Some books seem to batter their way to immortality against all the odds, by sheer brute artistic strength, and high up in this curious and honourable company must be counted The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists. Robert Tressell's unfailing humour mixes with an unfailing rage and the two together make a truly Swiftian impact.' Evening Standard Robert Tressell has complete familiarity with the idiom of his characters. His language is bizarre, vital, highly inventive and precisely heard -- it is a complete and living archaeology of the speech of a particular human group. A brilliant and very funny book.'--Spectator Magazine

A Custoer Review at Amazon.com (30 of 31 people found the following review helpful):
This makes powerful reading. My sense from the start was that the story wasn't fiction outside the names of those peopling it, but in fact the author's own experience of life endured by the working class in England at the turn of 1900. That in itself made it fascinating.

At times I felt the author's rants about the evils of capitalism and the working class being their own worst enemy tiresome (if true), but then I realised his frustration with the mindset of those he spent his working life with would have made him feel the need to rave. What could be worse than spending your every working day in the company of miserable forelock-tuggers, men who at once idolised and hated their masters, and hated themselves even more. We see much of this frustration in the character Owen and his contempt for his fellow workers for regarding their state of starvation and wretched poverty as a privilege and are fiercely committed to preserving the system that keeps them downtrodden. . .

When a used-to-be Socialist tells Barrington 'enlightenment will never be brought about by arguing with people,' I couldn't have agreed more. While Barrington took this on board as dishearteningly true, delightfully, it didn't take the fight out of him. . .

"The Lord of the Rings & The Hobbits" by J.R.R. Tolkien | PDF Pages: 1.347 | File Size: 13MB |

To make that journey slightly possible, Frodo is accompanied by the Fellowship of the Ring, consist of representations from every race inhabits Middle Earth, such as Gandalf the wizard, Aragorn the ranger (and prince), Legolas the elf, Gimli the Dwarf, and some others. Along the way, Frodo meets the previous bearer of the ring, Gollum, who becomes his guide to reach Mordor. And during that journey, the evilness of One Ring slowly but surely begins consuming Frodo. Harper Lee - To Kill a Mockingbird.pdf (eBook)

Harper Lee - To Kill a MockingbirdPDF Pages: 257 | File Size: 1.5 MB |

In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee visualized many issues and perspectives that existed during the Great Depression. Although the novel takes a fictional town as its setting (Maycomb, Alabama), all that Lee captured and told in the story is nothing but the actual and factual situation in America during the Great Depression. Through main character, the six-year-old Scout Finch, is the narrator and she brings readers to experience the life of a "dying town" where job was hard to find, economy was at the most difficult point, and social norms, especially regarding racial issues or stereotypes, were on a turning point.

Those are seriously serious matters, but the way Harper Lee wrote took readers' views through "the eyes" of Scout Finch makes the story warm and sometimes amusing. Scout Finch's father, Atticus, is lawyer and recently took he a case to defend an African American who was mistakenly being accused of raping a white girl. Both Scout and Atticus are on missions dealing with social discrimination and stereotype. While her father is trying to "fight against" the racial perspective of the society, Scout and her older brother, Jem, are on their own case to reveal the mysterious character of Boo, their neighbor, who is being viewed as "monster" in their neighborhood.

The Time Traveler's Wife PDF eBookPDF Pages: 385 | File Size: 1.5 MB |

A romantic story with a whole different taste and perspective.

"The Time Traveler's Wife" by the American author Audrey Niffenegger is an interesting and powerful books. Audrey did an amazing job in combining some of the most complex ideas--such as time travel, marriage, love, children, literary and artistic considerations, religion, death, drugs, growth, loss, and to sum all of those, what it means to be human--and into a great work that can be said as literally poetic and with astounding clarity.

The characters are all great and so human people, each has strengths and weakness. How Henry, the time traveler, bumping from one point of time to another, cleverly isn't picked as the main line of the whole events in story, instead the events and conflicts are arranged and sequenced in such a way that you still move along with each character's growth as a person. Though it's no surprise that there were many surprises here and there.

Clare, the time traveler's wive herself, shows to readers something truly remarkable, to always be there for Henry, to always be the one who waits for her better half from the unpredictable journeys. t even worse, since both never know when will Henry go and will he return.

Sinclair Lewis - Babbitt.pdf (eBook)

Sincalir Lewis - Babbitt.pdf (eBook)PDF Pages: 344 | File Size: 1 MB |

Sincalir Lewis wrote this genius satire to capture the irony about society, social class, standards, behaviors, and, since it's regarded by many that the state Babbitt lives in, Winnemac, is the resemblance of some states in America, then American Dream is also one of the issues in this novel.

Babbitt is a unique, if not paradoxical, character that depicted masterfully by Lewis. This character is so alive and complex of a character that readers might adore him and despise him even only within the range of one or two pages. As a middle class man with middle class family, he tries to make his way to finds a way to improve the life he doesn't please with that he's having.

Sincalir Lewis pictures Babbit's middle-classness with a very interesting perspectives. In these hilarious events, he invites and proudly welcomes a local millionaire businessman to have a dinner at his house, only to find a bad evening because of their "gap of social class." But then he experiences a polar opposite night when he was invited by a friend to have a dinner at that friend's house, someone from "the lower social class." Kind of ironic, and silly if we really look into it. And Sinclair Lewis captures those thing wittily in this novel.

[Duration: 44 Min; File Size: 48 MB]

Summer in Paradise is the 27th album of The Beach Boys that was released in 1992. Despite any critics or chart and sale measurements, to able to release albums in 4 consecutive decades in the space of not more than 5 years is quite a big achievement for a band. Entering the 90's era, The Beach Boys proved that they did still exist.

This album broke another record by being the first who applied Pro Tools in the production process, so this album is a full digital one, especially the rhythmic session which is fully electronic and the only band member who actually play instruments was Bruce Johnston.

However, the this release sold in very minimum number (less than 10,000 copies). The critics are not so friendly either with this album, and they are still criticizing this album even in these days. It never enter the charts, neither in the US or UK. And the sale, well, it's hardly traceable.

The American surf-rock/rock n roll band, The Beach Boys, released another that became their 26th near the end of the 80's era (in 1989 to be exact), entitled Still Cruisin'. This album contains a single that once hit number one in the US single chart, "Kokomo," which became the source of inspiration for the band to compile another full release.

Brian Wilson was still having his illness and other issues during the production of Still Cruisin that his true fresh and original input for this album was the song "In My Car". He no longer hold the position as producer for this album as they employed American great producer, Terry Melcher.

Pushed by the hype of the single "Kokomo", which was warmly welcomed by public, this album became Beach Boys best achievement in US chart and market since 1976, though this release was out of the British chart. In America, this album hit #46 in the chart and the sale went Gold (and with time increasing to Platinum).

In 1985, The Beach Boys for the first time released a self-titled album, which also became their first release on CD format. The recording process also became the first experience for the band members to do a digital recording. It also became the first album released after Dennis Wilson's death in 1983. Other marks made by this album are: this became the band's last release under CBS Record and the last album that contains the band's new original songs.

However this particular album was not warmly welcomed by public. It only reached #52 in the US chart, though it was the best achievement they would ever get after their 15 Big Ones album, and #60 in the British chart.

[Duration: 33 Min; File Size: 29 MB]

Keepin' the Summer Alive was released by The Beach Boys in 1980 as their twenty-fourth album, the first in the new 80's era. Learning from the low public and market appreciation for their previous album, After L.A. (Light Album), the record label now demand more intense contribution from the band leader Brian Wilson by producing the album himself (like how it used be in their massive success around the 60's and early 70's).

But once again, the things during the recording sessions didn't go really well with Brian Wilson focused only in old songs (even doing covers) and Dennis Wilson's dispute with the rest of the band members that finally lead to his leave from the recording sessions. And this album became the last one that features Dennis Wilson. He was drowned in 1983, while the next time The Beach Boys released an album was in 1985.

Upon it release, Keepin' the Summer Alive reached #75 in the U.S. chart and #54 in the UK. Once again, the band failed to capture the market as this release even failed to hit Silver on its sale.

At the the end of the 70's era, The Beach Boys released L.A. (Light Album) as their 23rd album, in March 1979 to be exact. Though CBS Record poured forth a wealthy amount of fund in the contract that called for Brian Wilson huge contribution, his contributiopn and presence in this album is so little that they called in James William Guercio as the co-producer.

Public's appreciation toward The Beach Boys and their album was not so warm at this point of time and it reflected in the sale and chart rank as well. It never even reached Silver for its sale and for the chart rank it only occupied #100 in the US and #32 in the UK.

Amid a situation full of unpleasant things and disputes surrounding the band, and with only three members preformed for the album The Beach Boys released their 22nd album, M.I.U. Album, in 1978.

With Dennis Wilson busy with his own solo album, practically only Mike Love, Al Jardine, and Brian Wilson did the the recording process in the studio, though Brian was beginning to again indicate drug use and mental illness. This album was planned to be released around Christmas at Maharishi International University (Iowa), which gave it the title M.I.U.

The majority opinions for this release are negative, even Brian Wilson himself, who said that it was "an embarrassment to [his] life". Some critics called it a dreadful album with pitiful contents. This album can only survived in the US chart by gaining #151 position but it completely out of the British chart.

[Duration: 35 Min; File Size: 31 MB]

Love You is The Beach Boys' 21st album that was released in 1977. Brian Wilson took charge again as the band leader and main creative force by written and performed almost all the album materials. However, this time it aroused different reviews from the critics, ranging from very positive to very negative, that some said Brian Wilson had lost the touch to be professional songwriter and singer, let alone producing music albums. Yet they who favored this album found it to have unique and distinctive musicality.

Some opinions stated that Love You is the last of truly great album from that particular American band, while some considered the sound in this release is unconventional and difficult to comprehend. But with the advent of new musical era at the end of the 70's (with disco and punk), apparently it diminished The Beach Boys' commercial hype. This particular album disappointingly reached only #53 in US chart and once again slightly better in UK chart by hitting number 28.

In 1976, after a quite long time off from studio activities and three years after their previous Holland album, The Beach Boys recorded and released their 20th album. That "holiday" period seems did result in something good for the band used-to-be leader, Brian Wilson, as he could overcome his illness and once again take the role as producer for this album.

Apparently, public were longing for this band too since the media coverage for this album was quite a hype by NBC TV broadcasting a special program for the "come back" of The Beach Boys. The charts was also welcoming this album well, as it reached number 8 in the US chart, but unlike several of their previous albums, the rank it got in UK chart was lower, which is at #31. For the sale, this album hit Gold in the US.

Holland is The Beach Boys nineteenth album. This album was released to the market in January 1973. Just like the what title said, the recording process for this album take place in a studio in Baambrugge, Netherlands. As the result, this album is also known as the "expensive" album of this great American band.

While the production process was already on the run, Brian Wilson found it difficult to make the flight to Holland because of his even worse mental illness. However he finally made the journey to Holland and contributed as much as he can (which was not much) to the album.

The reviews on Holland mostly encouraging and it helped the band in recovering their critical image as top musicians. This album hit #36 in the US chart and went Silver, while in UK chart it reached #20.

[Duration: 34 Min; File Size: 30 MB]

The Beach Boys released their studio album number 18, Carl and the Passions – "So Tough" in 1972. During the recording sessions of this album, Bruce Johnston had some heat with the band's manager, Jack Rieley, which finally led to Johnston's resignation from the band. So this album is much of a transitional as Johnston's departure was soon followed by the incoming of two new members, namely Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar. Both came in with their own personal musical style and it took some times for the band to blend well.

No surprise that public (and market) gave not-so-warm appreciation toward Carl and the Passions – "So Tough". It reflected by its sale that didn't even go Silver. It also didn't soar in the chart as it only got to #50 in the US and #25 in the UK. However, as years passed, many deem this album as a critical point (and achievement) for The Beach Boys amid their difficult transition.

[Duration: 36 Min; File Size: 33 MB]

The Beach Boys made an "unsuccessful masterpiece" with their 16th album Sunflower that was released in 1970. The artistic quality of their music is among their best in this album and it was (and is) favorable by critics, yet its achievement in the market was quite low. It was also reflected by Sunflower achievement in the chart: in US it only went as far as 151 and the British chart accepted it better so it reached #29.

The main creative force for this album still came from the Wilson brothers, Dennis and Brian, although Brian was not playing as much role as Beach boys previous albums. And despite some high-quality tracks they managed to create, only the reviewers accepted them and not the market. The good reputation of this album is shown by Rolling Stone magazine decision to include it in their 500 Greatest Albums of All Time at number 380.

If Beach Boys' "Best of" packages (there were already three prior to this album) and "Stack-O-Tracks" are to be counted, then this particular album is their 20th, and apparently that's the reason they named it 20/20.

This album was released in 1969 and the role of Brian Wilson as producer and main creative force was getting lesser in this album, which probably because of all the emotional problems he suffered during that period of time. While Brian was not around, both his younger brothers Dennis and Carl Wilson took much charge in the studio.

This album achieved better than Beach Boys previous album, Friends. Yet the oddity still went on, as they are American band but accepted better by the British Media. In the US this album only peaked at #68, while in the UK it went as high as #3 in the chart.

In 1968, Beach Boys released their 14th album, Friends. During that time, Mike Love was deeply into meditation things and went to India along with The Beatles members. Yet he still did the vocal takes after he returned from that spiritual journey.

While Love is not around. the other members of the band (Brian Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Carl Wilson, Al Jardine and the new Bruce Johnston) did the recording sessions. This album also marked the first time Dennis Wilson gave important contribution for the band's album, with the songs Be Still and Little Bird.

With Friends, The first Beach Boys released album in stereo only for the first time. Oddly enough, its achievement in the UK chart where it ranked at #13) was far better then in the US chart (where it only reached #126).

Pet Sounds is The Beach Boys' eleventh album and it was released in 1966. From the moment of its release, it has been considered as one of the most influential popular music albums and one of the best 60's music albums. As a proof, in 2003, Rolling Stones Magazines put this album at #2 in their 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

This great achievement probably came true because of Brian Wilson decision to quit touring and focused on writing and recording. He explored many recording and instrumentation techniques during the making of this album. Oddly enough, at that time it only reached number 10 in US chart, though it went Platinum in US, but it got into number 2 in UK chart.

For their tenth album, the beach released an album containing cover songs with acoustic instrumentation in late 1965. Another difference in this album is it was mostly recorded live, almost like a jam session in a party. Among the cover songs there are some The Beatles' numbers and Bob Dylan's The Times They Are a-Changin.

Despite the chart success, as it hit number 6 in US and number 3 in UK, the selling was not so high that it didn't even reach Gold.
