First published in 2006, The Higher Power of Lucky is a children’s novel written by Susan Patron. The book has successfully won Newbery Medal in 2007 and also successfully drawn a controversy. As written in a New York Times article, some school libraries banned it as a result of the use of a single word, “scrotum”, in the first page. Responses came from Patron herself, associations, and fellow authors. Patron stated that the choice of the word was based on her own knowledge of a rattlesnake biting a dog's scrotum and it also serves as anatomy explanation for 9 – 12 years old readers. The American Library Association and some authors also encouraged people to see the real value in the novel and not to focus on that single word.
