Eugénie Grandet is novel by French author Honoré de Balzac published in 1883. Balzac is well known for his keen remark on details and his straightforward portrayal of society, and that qualities make the characters he created complex, all-around, and morally ambiguous—or in short, completely human. That’s the reason he is regarded as a pioneer in European realism and he has influenced many famous writers including Marcel Proust, Charles Dickens, Edgar Allan Poe, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, and Jack Kerouac.
